Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from captain Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple interviews in the wake of his team's loss in the second Ashes against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, after Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, he said his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435.

This means, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of play – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There is no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
